Introduction

Male infertility may be indicated by damaged sperm DNA, even if other sperm factors appear normal in a semen analysis test, according to research. The DNA Fragmentation Test (DFI) helps to explore male fertility issues beyond basic assessments by checking how much of the sperm DNA is damaged. Although sperm are tiny, they carry a massive amount of genetic information to the egg, which can sustain damage and break during the journey to the egg.

What Does The Test Check?

The Test checks how much of the sperm DNA is damaged.

Although sperm are tiny, they carry a massive amount of genetic information to the egg. This genetic information may sustain damage and break during the journey to the egg.

Semen Analysis vs DNA Fragmentation. What’s The Difference?

A semen analysis test is an important test that covers the basics of sperm health regarding sperm count, morphology and motility.

The DNA Fragmentation Test on the other hand can identify chromosomal damage in the sperm. It is typically recommended later in the fertility process, particularly in instances of recurrent miscarriages.

How Can The Test Help Diagnose A Potential Issue?

A low sperm DNA fragmentation result (below 25%) indicates that the sperm quality is good/healthy.

A DNA fragmentation result above 25% signals compromised sperm DNA, posing a higher risk of male factor fertility challenges.

What Causes DNA Fragmentation?

Damaged Sperm DNA can be linked to lifestyle elements, including smoking, alcohol consumption, recreational drug use and an inadequate diet.

Additionally, it might signal an underlying medical concern such as varicocele (a varicose vein in the scrotum) or an infection.
