“Losing a child means carrying an almost unbearable grief, experienced by many but talked about by few.”

This  Op Ed Article in the New York Times. written by Meghan Markle has deeply resonated with couples worldwide who have suffered a miscarriage.
Miscarriage affects approximately 1 in 4 couples, and we applaud The Duchess of Sussex for being open about her devastating loss.

Our team of doctors and embryologists at Beacon CARE Fertility are experienced in diagnosing and treating the causes of recurrent miscarriage.
The reasons for recurrent miscarriages fall into 2 categories:

1. Embryonic and
2. Non embryonic (such as hormone problems, blood clotting, immune system issues and sperm quality issues).

Dr. Bart Kuczera a consultant at Beacon CARE Fertility notes:

“Maternal age should be considered in the list of potential causes, simply because most miscarriages are due to chromosomal abnormalities, and the incidence of these increase as woman get older”.

At our clinic, chromosomal abnormalities can be identified before implantation by using a PGT-A test to screen the embryo before implantation.

By using this PGT-A test, our embryologists have an up to 85% chance of singling out embryos with abnormalities before transfer. This can therefore reduce the likelihood of miscarriage.

Dr. Bart continues:

“Some people are surprised to learn that the male’s semen quality can be a contributing factor in a miscarriage. Here at Beacon CARE Fertility, we can utilise a test called DNA Fragmentation to screen for this potential male factor issue”.

Finally, our scientists have created our new Beacon CAREunity saliva swab test that can identify a key gene mutation which can cause miscarriage in early pregnancy.

Some couples attending for IVF may be carriers of this mutation, and it can be identified with the saliva swab test and treated with medication.
