We’ve been trying for a baby. When should we seek fertility advice?

We recommend seeking fertility advice after one year of trying to conceive without success. However, if the woman is over 35 years old, we suggest seeking advice after six months of trying.

  • How common are fertility issues?:

Fertility issues increase as the maternal age of the woman increases. For example, approximately 1 in 10 couples will experience fertility issues if the woman is in her early to mid-thirties and 1 in 4 couples if the woman is in her late thirties.

  • How common is male infertility?:

A male fertility issue is the sole or contributing factor in up to 50% of all cases. A semen analysis test is a simple, non-invasive test to help determine if there is a male factor issue involved.

  • What is Embryo Genetic Testing? Why can it improve IVF Success?

When a sperm fertilises an egg, the embryo should result in having 23 pairs of chromosomes, i.e., one from the egg and one from the sperm in each pair, for a total of 46 chromosomes.

Embryo Genetic Testing (called PGT-A) can help identify embryos with this number of chromosomes and therefore the best chance of developing into a healthy pregnancy.

An embryo that doesn’t have the correct amount of chromosomes is unlikely to implant. If it does implant, it is very likely to miscarry.

  • Does Beacon CARE Fertility have options for people in Kerry seeking treatment at your clinic?

Yes, we have satellite services available at Scotia Clinic in Tralee.  Patients can have all their pre-treatment tests and monitoring scans carried out there and attend Beacon CARE Fertility for their Egg Collection and Embryo Transfer. We can also arrange consultations via Skype and we do not require a GP referral letter.
