Discover CAREunity:
A Breakthrough Test For Recurrent Miscarriage Causes
What Is CAREunity?
CAREunity is an innovative saliva swab test developed by our scientists that can help identify one of the causes of recurrent miscarriages and other placental problems. It is unique to CARE Clinics.
How Does It Work?
- Saliva Test: CAREunity uses a saliva swab to detect a specific gene mutation that can increase the risk of miscarriages in early pregnancy.
- Who Is At Risk?: Some couples may carry this gene mutation without knowing it.
- Treatment: If the mutation is found, it can be managed with medication.

Understanding Recurrent Miscarriage
Over the past decade, there have been significant advances in understanding and treating recurrent miscarriages, especially in the field of assisted reproduction. One of the most exciting developments is the CAREunity test, also known as the C4M2 Variant or Annexin A5 M2 Haplotype.
Why Is CAREunity Important?
CAREunity is designed for those who have faced repeated unexplained miscarriages or failed IVF treatments. The test looks for a genetic variation in a specific gene on chromosome 4, named C4M2 (C4 for chromosome 4, M2 for the mutation location).

The Annexin A5 Gene
This gene is crucial for normal blood clotting. A mutation can cause blood clotting disorders. Increased clotting in the placenta can lead to miscarriage or implantation failure due to reduced blood flow to the embryo. This gene mutation can also cause other issues, like pregnancy-related high blood pressure and growth problems in the baby.
How the CAREunity Test Works
- Gene Detection: CAREunity can identify the Annexin A5 gene mutation in either partner.
- Procedure: A simple swab from the inside of the mouth of both partners is taken.
- Results: The results are available within a few weeks
- Treatment: If the mutation is found, the woman undergoing an embryo transfer will be prescribed a blood-thinning medication starting at the time of the embryo transfer and continuing until at least 12 weeks of pregnancy.
CAREunity is available to patients at our clinic. We are committed to doing everything possible to help those experiencing recurrent miscarriages. Contact us to find out more.

HFEA (UK) Comment
Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) is the Fertility Treatment regulatory authority in the UK. HFEA believe that the best way to be certain that a treatment is powerful enough to be utilised regularly is to do a randomised controlled preliminary (RCT). In a RCT, patients are appointed to two gatherings at random: a treatment gathering, given the new treatment and a benchmark group, given either a working treatment or a placebo treatment.
The CAREunity test has not been dependent upon a Random Controlled Trial (RCT) and supporting proof is limited. It is imperitive that you talk about with Beacon CARE for suitability and if CAREunity can be included with your treatment.
