We've been trying for a baby for a while. When should we seek advice?
We recommend that you see a fertility specialist if:
- You’ve been having regular, unprotected intercourse for one year (or 6 months if the female partner is over 35) and you have not yet become pregnant.
- The woman has irregular painful periods or a history of abdominal or pelvic surgery.
- You’ve had two or more miscarriages, as this might indicate that there is something preventing your embryos from implanting.
How Many Couples Need Help Having A Baby?
Approximately 1 in 5 couples in Ireland will encounter issues conceiving.
Are Problems Conceiving Typically A Female Issue
No. You may be surprised to learn that a male factor issue is the sole contributor in about 30% of cases. It is a contributing factor in a further 20% of cases.
How Do I Book An Appointment With You?
It is easy to book an appointment with one of our expert Fertility Consultants. Just go to our Make An Appointment page and fill out your details (we can’t take them over the phone for GDPR reasons).
A member of our helpful team will then get in touch with you to arrange a day that is convenient for you. If you would prefer to give us a call first, our friendly team will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
Do I Need A Referral Letter From My GP?
No, that is not required. However, if you have undergone treatment previously, a copy of your medical history will ensure you receive a fully informed initial consultation.
What Should I Expect At A Consultation?
Your consultation is your opportunity to discuss your fertility concerns and ask any questions you may have.
Based on your individual circumstances, your Consultant will develop a personalised treatment plan tailored to you.
To help your Consultant provide a more comprehensive consultation, we recommend attending the clinic approximately two weeks before your consultation, where possible, to complete certain fertility tests (some female test results can take 7-10 days).
What Fertility Tests Do You Recommend?
The following tests help your Consultant build a more complete picture of your fertility health:
Male Test
- Semen Analysis – assesses the quantity and quality of sperm. This can be carried out on the day of your consultation at our clinic.
Female Tests
- Transvaginal Ultrasound Scan – provides an assessment of the ovaries and uterus.
- Female Fertility Profile – includes an AMH blood test (to assess ovarian reserve), TSH (to evaluate thyroid function), Rubella immunity screening and Chlamydia screening.
What Should I Expect From the Ultrasound Scan?
The fertility ultrasound scan is performed transvaginally.
A small, slim ultrasound probe is gently placed into the vagina to obtain clear images of the uterus and ovaries.
The procedure is quick, typically taking just a few minutes. The scan is usually painless, although some women may experience a feeling of pressure or mild discomfort.
